1,3-Butadiene (C4H6) Emergency Shutdown System
About 1,3-Butadiene
1,3–Butadiene is a flammable, colorless toxic gas with a pungent odor similar to that of gasoline at standard temperature and pressure. It is considered a ‘probable carcinogen’ by the Environmental Protection Agency. Breathing very high levels of 1,3-butadiene for a short time can cause central nervous system damage, blurred vision, nausea, fatigue, headache, decreased blood pressure and pulse rate, and unconsciousness.
Approximately 75% of all 1.3–Butadiene is used in the production of synthetic rubber. It is also used in making plastic. It is shipped in pressurized tank cars.
1,3-Butadiene is also known as biethylene, bivynl, divynl B, erythrene, and Vinylethylene.
Recommendations for the Safe Handling of 1,3 Butadiene
All necessary safety precautions recommended for the handling of a flammable, compressed gas must be observed. As outlined in the Handbook of Compressed Gases (4th ed. Compressed Gas Association), in the event of a 1,3 Butadiene leak, the leak should be shutdown if it can be done safely, without risk to personnel.
Accidental Release of 1,3 Butadiene
Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like 1,3-Butadiene. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency valve closure system will automatically close the container valves in seconds, effectively preventing a reportable release regardless of where the leak occurs downstream.
It is possible to prevent an accidental release of 1,3 Butadiene. Contact us today to discuss your specific application requirements.
