Chloroethane (C2H5Cl/CH3CH2Cl) Emergency Shutdown System
About Chloroethane
Chloroethane is a colorless gas at standard temperature and pressure. It has a characteristically sharp smell. Chloroethane catches fire easily. Brief exposure to high levels can produce temporary feelings of drunkenness. At higher levels, it can cause lack of muscle coordination and unconsciousness. It can also cause stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and eye irritation. Depending on the level of exposure, it is a possible cancer hazard. When inhaled, it can act as a simple asphyxiant
Chloroethane is a liquid when stored in pressurized containers; however, the liquid evaporates quickly when exposed to room air. Chloroethane is often used in the manufacturing and production of insecticides, dyes and drugs. It is shipped in pressurized containers and tank cars.
Accidental Release of Chloroethane
In the event of an accidental release of chloroethane, it is critical to shut off the gas supply.
Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like chloroethane. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency shutdown system will close the container valve within seconds, effectively preventing a reportable release regardles of where the leak occurs downstream.
It is possible to prevent an accidental release of chloroethane. Contact us today to discuss your specific application requirements.
