Dimethylamine (C2H7N) Emergency Shutdown System
About Dimethylamine
Dimethylamine is a colorless, flammable gas with a strong ammonia/fish-like odor. It is used as a solvent and in making rubber, textiles, drugs, and other chemicals.
Dimethylamine can cause skin irritation and burns, irritation of the nose and throat, fluid build up in the lungs, and can severely irritate and burn the eyes with possibility of permanent damage (blindness). Repetitive exposure to Dimethylamine can cause damage to the liver.
Synonyms: Dimethylamine, anhydrous
Handling an Accidental Release of Dimethylamine
In the event of a spill or leak involving dimethylamine, persons not wearing protective equipment and clothing should be restricted from contaminated areas until cleanup has been completed. All sources of heat and ignition should be removed from the area and potenially explosive atmospheres should be well ventilated as Dimethylamine is extremely flammable. If it can be done safely, the leak should be stopped by closing the container using non-sparking tools.
Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like Dimethylamine. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency shutdown system will close the container valves within seconds, effectively stopping further release regardless of where the leak is located downstream.
It is possible to prevent an accidental release of Dimethylamine. Contact us today to discuss your specific application requirements.
