Shut Off Systems for Hazardous Gases Such as Ethylene Oxide (EtO)

About Ethylene Oxide

Ethylene Oxide is a colorless, flammable gas at standard temperature and pressure. At toxic levels it smells similar to ether. Exposure to EtO can cause blurred vision and eye pain, difficulty breathing, dizziness, nausea, headache, convulsions, blisters and vomiting. It is a known carcinogen and has also been linked to spontaneous abortion, genetic damage, nerve damage, peripheral paralysis, muscle weakness and impaired mental ability.

It is used in the production of solvents, antifreeze, textiles, detergents, adhesives, pharmaceuticals and polyurethane foam. Ethylene Oxide is shipped in pressurized tank cars using angle plug or angle ball valves.

Ethylene Oxide Valve Closure Systems (Shutdown Systems)

Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like ethylene oxide. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency valve closure system will close the valves in 10 seconds or less, effectively preventing further release from the container.

To prevent ignition source sparks from being generated by contact between UniPro™ Valve Closure actuators and platform or container components, spark resistant materials are used in the sensitive areas of the Unipro™ actuators. Valve handle adapters utilize brass and aluminum. Clamps used to fasten the actuators and hose manifolds to steel dome walls are fabricated from aluminum. Where UniPro™ actuators must operate in close proximity to the actual valve outlets, as with the UniPro™ QT actuator for quarter turn ball valves, bronze is used where metal to metal wear contact is present and aluminum is used for the actual body of the actuator. No structurally strong metal is truly spark-proof. However, by utilizing these spark resistant materials, the UniPro™ family of actuators and accessories provide a minimum risk environment when working around explosive fluids. All UniPro™ valve actuators are powered by pneumatic motors utilizing composite air motor vanes. These produce neither sparks or heat and can be energized with inert nitrogen to further reduce the danger of ignition.
