Hydrogen Chloride (HCl) Valve Shutoff
About Hydrogen Chloride
Hydrogen Chloride is a colorless to slightly yellow, non-flammable gas at standard
temperature and pressure with a pungent, irritating odor. Mixed with water, it becomes
hydrochloric acid (also known as Muriatic acid). Exposure to HCl can result in irritation
to the eyes, throat and skin. Prolonged exposure to Hydrogen Chloride can cause
death.
Hydrogen Chloride is used as a cleaning gas during epitaxial deposition and as a
furnace cleaning agent. It is shipped in pressurized tank cars with angle plug or
angle ball valves.
Synonyms: hydrochloric acid, aqueous hydrogen chloride, HCL solution, chlorhydric
acid, hydrochloride, hydrogen chloride, muriatic acid, spirits of salt, UN 1050,
UN 1789, UN 2186
Accidental Release of Hydrogen Chloride
In the event of an accidental release of hydrogen chloride, remove sources of ignition
and if possible without risk, shut off the gas supply.
Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases
of Hydrogen Chloride. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency shutdown
system will immediately close the container valve, stopping the source of the leak
regardless of where it occurs downstream.
It is possible to prevent an accidental release of Hydrogen Chloride.
