Powell Fabrication & Manufacturing, Inc.

Vinyl Chloride Monomer Shutdown System

Powell is the only manufacturer to offer Vinyl Chloride Monomer valve shutoff systems with pneumatic or electric actuators for use on either small containers (150 lb. – 1 ton) or large containers (such as 90 ton railcars). Powell has taken great care to design dependable systems that are convenient to use, powerful, versatile, and most importantly, reliable. We are proud to have developed valve closure systems superior to any other shutdown system available on the market.

Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) Valve Shutoff

About Vinyl Chloride Monomer

Vinyl Chloride Monomer is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet aroma at standard temperature and pressure. It is an inhalation hazard and has been linked with the formation of angiosarcoma. In the presence of air, Vinyl Chloride Monomer is an explosion hazard as well. Upon standing, it can produce peroxides, which may then explode. It is reported that "large fires of this material are practically inextinguishable".

Vinyl Chloride Monomer is used almost exclusively in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It is shipped in pressurized tank cars having angle plug or angle ball valves.

Synonyms: monochloroethylene, ethylene monochloride, VC, VCM, chloroethene, chloroethylene

Accidental Release of Vinyl Chloride Monomer

In the event of an accidental spill or release of vinyl chloride monomer, it is recommended to shut off the gas supply if this can be done safely. Powell Emergency Valve Closure Systems are designed to prevent significant releases of hazardous gases like vinyl chloride monomer. In the case of an accidental release, the emergency shutdown system will immediately close the container valve, stopping the leak regardless of where it is located downstream.
