Powell Fabrication & Manufacturing, Inc.

Low Torque Emergency Gas Valve Shutdown System

Powell is the only manufacturer to offer emergency shutdown systems with pneumatic or electric actuators for use on either small containers (150 lb. – 1 ton) or large containers (such as 90 ton railcars). Powell has taken great care to design dependable systems that are convenient to use, powerful, versatile, and most importantly, reliable. We are proud to have developed valve closure systems superior to any other shutdown system available on the market.

Why the UniPro™ LT? Can’t I just turn down the pressure to operate the soft seat/low torque angle plug valves with the UniPro™ Standard?

Answer:

No. Reducing the pressure far enough to achieve only 30 lb-ft of torque from the UniPro™ Standard actuator will result in an operating pressure below the threshold pressure of the air motor used in the actuator. When activated below its threshold pressure, the air motor may or may not start to turn. In this case, there is a chance that the actuator would not close the valve! The pressure regulator on the UniPro™ Air Control Unit should be checked and adjusted to 90 psig when it is installed. It should then be locked in place and left at that pressure.
